Light Workload
“Presley Johnson Jr. replaces a light bulb in Christmas decorations in the basement of Century II on Friday, as workers began unraveling Wichita’s decorations in preparation for the annual lighting of Douglas. The decorations were purchased in 1981, when the late Opal Wetzel went on a one-woman campaign to raise funds to light up downtown. She collected $65,000, allowing Greater Downtown Wichita, Inc. to purchase an 18 foot tall Santa, 84 banners, assorted garlands, giant poinsettias, and 70,000 watts worth of lights.”
