Skip Granger, 1960
My friend Dave Miller lived one block away from me in the College Hill Park area, and we often indulged in (mis)adventures. I always enjoyed his family, and one summer I was invited to their Colorado home along with his father and brother, who had just bought a new Chevrolet. Escape from the Kansas heat — what could be better?!? (Left: Dave Miller)
Shortly after we arrived, we noticed that the creek was rising and would soon be precipitously close to the cabin. That caused no apparent alarm to the Miller boys, who hastened off to the hardware store to buy some dynamite to blow up the growing beaver dam. As a novice to such antics, I stood by and watched. Dave, who had always been a huge fan of the military (though often for the wrong side in my view) was ready to go. This adventure was unexpected and seemed somewhat dangerous to me. However, I was in good hands and soon learned what ”if the crik don’t rise” actually meant!
In high school, Dave needed a car, but his family being somewhat older, he could not afford the luxury of his brother’s new Chevy. He bought Mike Elwell’s 1942 Ford convertible (primer grey with louvers in the hood from which smoke would emit because the car ‘drank’ oil). Many of my most exciting high school events occurred in that car since Mike was a very close friend. The car was quite old and needed a proper burial. Instead, Dave ran it into a tree! Rest in peace, Dave Miller.
