Remembering Bob Curry, 1942-2022

Bob Curry, 1942-2022

Mike Tearney

I met Bob Curry in 1949 in the second grade at Alcott Elementary School.  We also attended Robinson Intermediate School, East High School and the University of Wichita  together.

While at Robinson, we used to ride our bicycles out to Beech Lake and fish.  Later at East when we could drive, we would drive to several local farm ponds to fish and even did a little duck and prairie chicken hunting.  After graduation from East in 1960, we took a great trip to Colorado with fellow 1960 graduates, John Howard and Ralph Schmidt.  Bob and I were fraternity brothers at Delta Upsilon in college. (Left, Mike Tearney in 1960; below right, Bob Curry in 1960))

After college in the mid-1960’s, we both left Wichita, he to Colorado and me to Missouri (He got the better of that move!!).  He later moved back to Wichita, but I never did and in fact very seldom even visited Wichita after 1980.

Regardless, Bob and I always stayed in touch by telephone several times per year during the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s.  Once email started, we would write each other at least two or three times per month and also continued to talk on the telephone several times per year.  Luckily, when I was in Wichita last summer, we were able to spend the afternoon together and drove around to many of the old fishing holes, neighborhoods, schools and the university.

I can honestly say that I never heard Bob utter a cross word about anyone and never saw him get mad.  To me, Bob Curry was the brother I never had.  I will miss him deeply for the remainder of my life.
