Per a November 23, 2021, article in the Wichita Eagle, “Wichita East High School will vacate its science wing next semester while crews investigate structural integrity issues in part of the nearly 100-year-old building.”
It turns out these 16 rooms (the science wing) were renovated from the school’s old gymnasium as part of the district’s 2000 bond issue project.
A school district spokesman, speaking near the time of the Wichita Eagle article, said the district did not know if the 1920 infrastructure or the more recent additions are to blame for the structural integrity issue.
Given how often we were in that gymnasium and all of the commotion of basketball games and more, I am placing my bet that the structural integrity of the original building was/is just fine.
