The East High class of 1960 was filled with talented individuals who made their mark on the world in various ways. One notable event that shaped leadership skills and civic engagement was their participation in Boys State in 1959. Boys State, an immersive program that simulates the workings of government, provided these young men with invaluable experiences and opportunities to develop their leadership potential.
Attending Boys State allowed the class of 1960 participants to engage in mock elections, legislative debates, and other political activities, fostering their understanding of democracy and public service. These experiences honed their abilities to collaborate, negotiate, and communicate effectively with their peers. They gained insights into the complexities of government operations and the importance of active citizen involvement.
Many of the members who attended Boys State in 1959 went on to pursue careers in public service, law, and politics. Their time at Boys State instilled in them a sense of duty and civic responsibility that continued to guide their actions throughout their lives.
Participation in Boys State played a crucial role in shaping their leadership abilities and dedication to public service, and these 1960 East Aces left an indelible mark on their communities.

Gene Carter, Musing and Learning – Gene worked as a professor of international finance at Harvard, MIT, and other major institutions, governing board member for a major financial investment firm, and led his own foundation, which has made college possible for hundreds of Hispanic females studying engineering. He and Rita live in the Boston area.
Fred Elder, An Early Life Journey Fred went on to become an Engineering Professor at the University of Wisconsin Madison and led his own successful engineering company. He lives in Madison, WI.
Dan Kinney: A Community Leader – Dan earned local, state, and national honors for outstanding leadership during his career at Springfield, Missouri parks and recreation. A builder of community institutions and facilities, Dan is retired and living in Springfield.
Dan Tontz – In high school, Dan was literally the leader of the band, the Dan Tontz Combo, directing musicians who played for dances and other programs all over the Wichita area. As he explains in this story, he moved on from dance bands to leadership in his career field, Human Resources. Dan lives in Dallas, Texas, and has written more stories for the website.
Don Trees – Don is retired and living in Texas.
