News from East High’s 100th Birthday
East High’s 100th birthday celebration happened on schedule, complete with homecoming football game complete with tailgates, an All East Alumni Band and an All East Alumni Chorus, a parade on Douglas, and a lawn party on Saturday afternoon. Photos from various media sources show a very large, celebratory crowd on Saturday. At least two members of our class attended, Jake Jacobs and Ron Haun. If you were there, please send us a note and any photos you took.
Here’s what we have gathered so far.
- There were 2 mounted police officers on Clydesdale Horses on the East High grounds.
- Our old freight elevator has been converted and now transports students.
- Friday, October 6th marks the first time a varsity football game was played at East High School.
- Friday, October 6th was Homecoming at East High.
- Each of the 100 graduating classes was represented by banners in the hallways with one notable person for each year, many of them athletes. Bob Gates, Class of 1961, is an exception. The person selected for the Class of 1960 was golfer Johnny Stevens. In a major fumble, the photo on the banner hanging from the hallway ceiling appears to be some other guy, not our Johnny, pictured at right in 1960.
In other news —
- Sunnyside, Kellogg and Alcott elementary schools have all been converted to apartment buildings.
- North High’s mascot is now the Red Hawks.
