Wichita East Aerial View, October 1923
On October 7, 2023, the 100th Year Edition of the BLUE ACE BULLETIN was published commemorating 100 years of Wichita High School East. Thanks to Jake Jacobs, we have a copy of that paper and will present the articles from that 1923 publication to you. This is the first such article. The original title is the title of this article.
The new building is a modified form of “Collegiate Gothic” architecture and is a-symmetrical or irregular in form. It is built in three distinct units – main building, gymnasium, and shops. This was done in the interests of utility and economy. It is situated on the largest public school campus in the middle west and possibly in the entire country. This size of this campus allows the school to develop many activities that would otherwise be impossible. The auditorium is one of the most beautiful and commodious to be found anywhere. It has a remarkable “atmosphere.” About twenty-five hundred children are fed in the cafeteria daily, including those from Roosevelt Intermediate School. The miniature auditorium known as the effective speaking room is unique and is a gem of originality in design. The cloistered walks connecting the separate units are an attractive feature of the building. The shops occupy a one-story building apart from the main structure. Industrial work is given under as normal conditions as possible. The building has a laundry, an ice plant, a booth for a moving picture machine in the auditorium, offices for department heads, an office vault, a rest room for teachers, a special lecture room seating one hundred pupils, a greenhouse, built-in trophy cases and lockers, a visiting team room in the gymnasium, and a separate heating plant.
