On October 7, 2023, the 100th Year Edition of the BLUE ACE BULLETIN was published commemorating 100 years of Wichita High School East. Thanks to Jake Jacobs, we have a copy of that paper and will present the articles from that publication to you. This is the fourth in the series. The original title is the title of this article. This particular article appeared on 16Dec28 in The Wichita Eagle.
Bid farewell to the Bulldogs. This name which has been vogue for Wichita high athletic teams for generations is to be discarded. Starting with the near-at-hand basketball season, the Bulldogs will be called the Blue Aces.
This change was brought about due to the fact that next year the new high school will be opened and each school will adopt as a slogan some important Wichita industry. The Wichita high school, East, as the present school will be named, is to advertise the airplane industry. Names were submitted to the student council by the student body and after consideration of several hundred names, the Blue Aces was accepted.
Diane Rusch Zinn wrote an interesting version of the story on the Blue Aces mascot, using drawings and text from the 1929 yearbook, courtesy of Carol Weaverling Chambers. See “From Blue and White to Wichita East High Blue Aces.”
