Dick Neal, 1942-2003
George Palmer I can remember that Dick and I used to ride around after school sometimes. He would borrow his brother’s ’57 Vette once in awhile or his dad’s really nice ’55 Buick. One day we were in the Buick, and Dick was trying to get it to burn rubber. The Buick had the old Dynaflow transmission, which was an automatic shift. Dick moved the gear shift into neutral, revved up the engine, then popped the shift down into low gear with the engine revved up. (This is similar to ramming a manual transmission into reverse when the car is moving forward.) Instead of leaving burned rubber, this move tore up the transmission. I felt so sorry for Dick. He was a good man and a great friend. Dick and I went through Navy Boot Camp together in San Diego. After that, I lost track of him. What a great guy he was!
