Tribute to Army National Guard and Air National Guard

Always Ready, Always There

Mike Pace – Army National Guard

Mick Sullivan  I enlisted into the California Army National Guard Dental Corps as a Captain. During my duty I had the privilege to represent the United States Army internationally in Germany and also domestically throughout California. My younger brother by 13 years, Joseph Sullivan, also a dentist, followed in my footsteps and joined the California National Guard.  Being able to serve with a family member made our experience unique and fun.  My last 10 years of service was at rank of Major. It was an honor to serve in the Army for 22 years.

Bill Thompson – Army National Guard

I was in the Reserves, but was never called to serve.

Diana Woodward Hagle  As a member of the California Army National Guard and the Army Reserves, I served in the Judge Advocate General’s Corps.  My job was to brief commanders and troops on military legal matters: the Law of War ; the UCMJ; military-civilian issues (riots, fires, and natural disasters); and service-connected deaths. Our MEDSOM (logistics unit) was also deployed to Desert Storm on short notice at Christmas time, so I wrote wills, powers of attorney, and guardianship papers non-stop.

John Wright served in the Kansas National Guard.

Douglas J. Denny After graduating from KSU with a Bachelors in Architecture in 1965, I enlisted in the Air National Guard unit at McConnell AFB, Wichita, a six-year commitment.  In 1966, I accepted a position in an architectural office in Arlington, VA and transferred to the ANG unit at Andrews AFB, MD.  Both units had a squadron of 25-30 F-100 fighter jets, and I enlisted to be trained as a 1 & 2 Jet Engine Mechanic.  From there, it was on to the Air Force.

Ron Haun – I volunteered for the Air National Guard in Wichita in 1964. After Basic Training in Texas, I returned to Wichita and served by working at Boeing. One day in 1968, a group of us at Boeing were called together and informed that we were no longer Boeing employees and should report to McConnell AFB that evening for active duty. From January 1968 to May 1969, I was on active duty at McConnell. My  buddies got to go to South Korea, but I was sidelined with an injury and served out my time on the home front.
