Dave Barrier
David grew up in Wichita, Kansas, and graduated from Wichita East High School in 1960. He received his undergraduate and master’s degrees from the University of Kansas. After graduation, David moved to Washington, D.C., and obtained both his Juris Doctor and his Master of Laws in Taxation from George Washington University.
In 1972, David returned to the Kansas City area with his wife, Mary. He joined the law firm of Lathrop Koontz (later Lathrop & Gage) where he practiced law for more than 36 years. His practice, which focused on corporate and financial institution regulation, tax and transactions, took him repeatedly to both the West and East Coasts of the United States. For many years, he also led his firm’s public finance practice and was a nationally recognized bond counsel.
David loved his family, his friends, his community, fly fishing and the law. He was thoughtful, supportive, generous and dedicated to his family and friends; innovative and solution-oriented in client advocacy; and committed to his community, serving as a member of the Federal and State Affairs Committees of the KC Chamber of Commerce, and for many years, as Chair of the Kansas State Affairs Committee, where he worked for cooperative solutions to Bi-State issues. David was also an active supporter of the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, and a member of both the Society of Fellows and the Business Counsel.
We cherish our memories of David and we will miss him always.
