Josephine Gonzaque-Wilson, 1941-2002

Josephine Gonzaque-Wilson passed away Tuesday April 2, 2002, at the age of 60 years.
Born on October 27, 1941, in Shreveport, Louisiana, she was the last daughter of nine children born to Joseph and Virgil Gonzaque.

In 1960, along with most of her family, she moved to Wichita, KS. It was there in 1963 she met Reginald Brent Wilson, her soul mate, devoted husband for 38 years and father of her two sons Reginald Brent Wilson Jr. and Sean Oliver Wilson.

They moved to Texas in 1980, where Mama Jo, as most called her, continued her life’s work as the world’s most loving mother and wife. Mama Jo was the quintessential host-always making everyone who came through the door feel welcomed and loved as if they were family. In her eyes and heart, everyone WAS family.

She was a very talented artist, so talented that both her children are successful artists. Her feature signature was to paint on glass beautiful nature scenes from her childhood days in Louisiana. She was an incredible cook; oh the food was rich with LOVE. Her legacy would bring people from miles around just to get a bowl of her file’ gumbo or plates of her countless other masterpieces. It was often said that Mama Jo could make a rock taste good, and a good rock tastes great.

Mama Jo loved to rejoice in life most of all, spreading her love to all creatures, two-legged, four-legged and winged, without discrimination, creed or color. She touched everyone-ANYONE, who met her deeply with a power she felt was given to her by Jesus, and she lived her life in His name accepting Him as her Savior. She cooked for us, cleaned for us, took care of us and bestowed upon us love that shall remain in our hearts forever.

Mama Jo is survived by her mother Virgil Gonzaque; husband Reginald Wilson; sons Reginald Jr.(Muriel) and Sean; three grandchildren: Brent, Danielle, and Rylan; one aunt, Kate Johnson; four sisters, Cecil Yarborough, Kate Ward, Margaret Gonzaque and Lucille Antee; two brothers: Henry and Joseph Gonzaque; sisters-in-law, Mazie Gonzaque, Ozzie Gonzaque, and Martha Gonzaque; brothers-in-law: John Yarborough and Lawrence Ward; three generations of nieces, nephews, other relatives, friends and a vast number of children she proclaimed as her own over the years.

May God’s light shine on her as she shined her light on us.
