Messenger Memories: Paper Drive to Raise Money for 1960 Sportsmanship Dance, from February 26, 1960

1950’s Paper Drive

“Paper, we want paper, we want stacks and stacks of paper,” chorus. Fred Freeman, Calvin Ross, Kim Corbin, Susie Smith, all ’60, and Myrna Iddings, ’61,  Intra-City Student Council representatives.

Subject of this harmonizing was the second Intra-city Student Council paper drive of this year, Feb. 26-27. This money-raising project will be conducted in a manner similar to the last drive, Dec. 18-19.

A contest will again be held among the nine Wichita high schools to see who can bring in the most paper. A Kansas Wastepaper Co. truck will be parked at each high school from 8 AM Friday morning to 5 PM  Saturday.

Proceeds from the paper drive will be used to finance the annual Sportsmanship Trophy dance at which time the Sportsmanship Trophy will be awarded. The first paper drive netted $62.47, but Intra-City Student Councilmen hope to make $200 this time.

“This year’s dance will have beautiful decorations, a good band, and hundreds of students from the city high schools in attendance,” commented Susie Smith. “The Sportsmanship Trophy will be awarded to the school judged by an Intra-City committee as the most sportsmanlike. East won the trophy in 1958 and North in 1959,” Susie added.

Fred Freeman, ’60,  again paper drive chairman for East, encourages all East students to bring wastepaper to school today or tomorrow to the truck parked in the “U”  between the 500 building and the girls’ gym.

North High won the first paper drive, completely filling a huge truck with 4,500 cubic feet of wastepaper. East managed to scrape  549 cubic feet for a poor second place in the contest.

Editor’s Note: Lots was going on this time of year at East.  “The Lark,” a play about Joan of Arc was set for February 17-18,  Carnival for Cash was set for February 20, and “Do, Re, Mi”  would be showing March 2-3.

All of the Messengers that were on display at our last reunion will again be displayed  at the Drury Broadview September 19-20.  Plan to look them over and take  one as a souvenir.
