Dick Zinn, Remembrances of Some Class of ’60 Young Women

Winter, 1953

I gave my Kress’ ID bracelet to Vesta Patterson to wear.  February 14, I forgot to give her a valentine.  Bracelet returned.

Didn’t work out.

Fall, 1955

I asked my Wichita Beacon paper route pal Jim Davidson to tell his neighbor Janice Lee that “I liked her.”

Reciprocity Failed.

Didn’t work out.

Summer, 1955

I walked blocks and blocks to Dallas Crump’s house singing to myself “On the Street Where You Live.”

She preferred a guy with a car.

Didn’t work out.

Summer, 1958

Top down on Susie Smith’s yellow convertible with “Rebel Rouser” playing at high volume on the radio.  Fall arrived.  Susie preferred someone else in the class of 1960.

Didn’t work out.

Summer, 1960

Began dating Diane Rusch.  Still see her regularly.

Seems to have worked out.

Editor’s Note:  We all expect our kids to keep secrets of their youthful escapades until well into adulthood. But spouses, too,  often keep secrets well into many years of marriage.  This was the first time I’ve heard any of the above, and Dick and I have been married sixty years!

Dick: Congratulations on your good sense and good taste in selecting Diane as your bride.
Diane: Congratulations on distracting your husband away from his wanton, girl-crazy ways with your wily charms.

Rita’s motto for Dick (not about Dick ): Luck beats brains.

Hope their lives worked out, having missed their big chance….
