Don Lowe – My Most Memorable Christmas,1970 in Vietnam

The Beer Can Christmas Tree

My 1970 Christmas tree was beer cans with a Christmas stocking.

On Christmas Eve, the Army Chaplain was having a midnight prayer gathering for all that wanted to participate. About five minutes after midnight the Viet Cong (our enemies, who always knew all about us) began a mortar attack at us. We ended up running toward our bunkers with the Chaplain in tow and having our own little prayer meeting.

We did have one Christmas treat on that Christmas in Vietnam.  The mother of a fellow soldier had sent him a Christmas package that included a loaf of white Wonder bread. When he opened the box he started yelling about fresh bread. His mom had sucked all the air out of the bread packaging so we had some fresh bread for Christmas. Even after traveling for weeks it was like new to us.  Simple remembrances are quite meaningful!

Merry Christmas to all and have another sleepless night.

This is an engaging tale of a highly adaptable life style. It seems like a very successful, if sometimes meandering, life full of appealing opportunities. Many people do not pursue chance possibilities, but your approach to life has been most resourceful!
