Barbara Hammond, 103 and Still Counting!

Miss Elfrieda Shellenberger, 2021

Yep, she is still living! Our English teacher, Miss Shellenberger, was born on December 24, 1920 and is about to celebrate her 103rd birthday.

I was driving on North Woodlawn a few days ago and passed Sedgwick Plaza, the assisted living facility where I interviewed Miss Elfrieda two years ago.

Remembering that day sparked me to call and ask if she was still living there. Because I’m not a family member, I didn’t want to ask too many questions, but I learned that she is still able-bodied enough to go to dinner in the group dining room.

On that information, I’m suggesting that we all send birthday cards to her. Even if you weren’t in one of her English Lit or Comp classes, I’m sure she would love to know that East students remember her. And please alert your siblings and friends so we can burden the post office with our effort.

Do it now! Scrap your intention to write a Christmas family newsletter and go buy a birthday card! Time is of the essence! As our Divine Miss S might have said, “Give it your best effort and by no means, hand it in late!”

This is a really great idea! She was not my teacher, but she was very popular and respected.
