Lucy Mae Florence, 1959
Editor’s Note: Graduates in the Class of 1960 became exemplary contributors to their communities and their families. Lucy Mae Florence was an outstanding woman, and we wish we knew more about her. Here’s what we do know.
Lucy Florence was born June 28, 1942 to Alsie and Rosa Florence. Some records show that she was born in Louisiana, and others state her birthplace as Wichita. Lucy was one of 11 children in the family, the second in line and the eldest girl. She graduated from East High School in 1960.
Lucy probably attended Kansas State University. Barb Hammond, ’60, found records in the Manhattan City Directory showing Lucy living in an apartment in Manhattan, KS in the early 60’s.
Lucy apparently enjoyed a high profile and impressive success in the field of business and finance. She appeared in the national publication Who’s Who of American Women in the editions of 1991, 1992, and 1993. She was also listed in Who’s Who in Finance and Industry, 1994-95.
Later in life, she lived in Alameda, California, surrounded by her very large extended family. She died on March 10, 2017 in Alameda. Lucy’s family supplied the following obituary at the time of her death:
In Loving Memory Of Ms. Lucy Mae Florence.
Beloved Mother, Grandmother, Sister, Aunt, Cousin and Friend to many.
Lucy will forever be remembered by those who knew her and loved her. Her smile and kind heart will live on in her family’s hearts. Rest In Peace until we meet again.
Never Forgotten. WE LOVE YOU ALWAYS.
