Dave Miller, 1942-2010

David Miller, 1942-2010

James David “Dave” Miller, of South Carolina, died unexpectedly on August 24, 2010. He was 67 years old. The youngest child of the late Wilkie and Fern Dennis Miller, Dave was preceded in death by his siblings: Wilkie Miller, Bill Miller, Donn Miller, Marilyn Miller Flottman and Irma Miller Stough. A native of Wichita, Kansas, he graduated from Sunnyside Elementary School, Wichita East High School and Wichita State University.

Dave enlisted in the Army in 1963. He graduated from Officers Candidate School at Ft. Bragg, NC in 1966. As a member of the 1st Cavalry Division, 8th Company, he served in Vietnam and was awarded numerous commendations, among them the Combat Infantry Badge and the Purple Heart. Dave continued to serve his country in the U.S. Army Reserves, retiring as a Lt. Colonel, following Desert Storm.

Throughout his 30-year career with the Social Security Administration, Dave worked in Baltimore, MD; Presque Isle, ME; and Seattle, WA. During his tenure, he served in the Congressional Inquiries Unit and worked as a claims authorizer, a disability specialist, and a German translator. He retired in 2001.

Dave had many passions. He enjoyed fly fishing and was a member of the Washington Fly Fishing Club in Seattle. He indulged his passion for history and genealogical research, discovering the stories of his family’s heritage, and reveling in an introduction to any new “cousin.” He served as a moderator on a website that assisted military veterans with re-entry into civilian life, providing support on issues related to personal disability associated with Agent Orange exposure and other service-related conditions.

Dave cherished the camaraderie of both old and new friends. He touched many lives, in many ways, without expecting anything in return. His gentle spirit and off-beat humor leaves us with precious memories and wishing for more. He was loved and is greatly missed. Dave leaves behind his greatest accomplishments, challenges and loves: Barbara Norris Miller, his wife of 41 years, and their children: David Miller of Seattle WA, Rebecca Miller of Washington, DC and Kristin Miller Lang and son-in-law Brian Lang of Columbia, SC. He was and always will be the beloved Pop-Pop of Jameson, Hayden and Joseph Lang. He is also survived by his sisters-in-law Hazel (Bill) Miller Graye and Lorene (Donn) Miller and his brother-in- law Arnold (Marilyn) Flottman, the numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts and uncles of the Dennis/Miller/Flottman/Stough families, and many, many dear friends.

In accordance with his wishes, Dave will be laid to rest with full military honors at Arlington National Cemetery on April 1, 2011 at 1500 hours. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to the Wounded Warrior Project: www.woundedwarriorproject.org.
